Four people from Mississippi were killed a few miles north of Pearl River on Interstate 59 when a tire from a truck blew, causing the truck to strike their vehicle head on. The truck was owned by Texas International Express. Several of the passangers in the vehicle were not wearing their seat belts, which no doubt the trucking company lawyers will try to use against them. Ironically a good biomechanical expert could show that the seat belts would likely have not helped to save the individuals given the fact that the truck weighed more than 75,000 pounds and their vehicle less than 8,000.
Interstate trucks must carry at least $750,000 in insurance. Steps should be taken immediately to preserve the truck's data recorder. Read our article here on that subject. Also, the tire should be examined immediately for a tread blowout. Tires are required to be inspected often on 18 wheel trucks so a blowout is unusual if all inspections had been properly taking place. A good trucking expert would exam all the truck records, but only if such documents are preserved.
The deceased were indentified as Dickson and Farrugia, while the driver was Juan Torres of Texas.
