St.John the Baptist Parish Truck Wreck Injures One

Posted on May 10, 2011

A serious eighteen wheeler accident in St.John the Baptist parish, Louisiana this month has not only put one person in critical condition, but caused toxic chemicals to spill out of the truck and into the roadway. The investigations into this accident are ongoing, and at the moment no citations have been made. However, toxicology tests have been run on the driver and the investigation into this wreck continue.

The driver of the eighteen wheeler was traveling down local Louisiana highway 3217 in a rural part of St.John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana when the accident occurred. The driver lost control of his vehicle that contained hazardous chemical materials, and over turned. The vehicle's contents spilled out all over the roadway and surrounding area, but did not eject the driver. At this time it is unknown if the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck, or not.

At this time, the driver is in critical condition at a local hospital. Routine toxicology tests have been run on the driver, but the results are still pending. The hazardous materials team of Louisiana has been sent out and is cleaning the area, which officials have said poses no threat to the people in the parish. The investigation into this wreck continues as more evidence is recovered, and tests that are being run come back.

Eighteen wheel vehicles are subject to many inspect laws. Often individual drivers of these vehicles rely on their employers to make these inspections on a regular basis. If the above accident was caused by a poor tire or other mechanical problem, it is possible the owner of the vehicle may not have performed the required inspections. Hopefully the investigation of the accident will look into such issues. Requiring periodic extensive inspections of all eighteen wheel vehicles by the owners of the vehicles is one good way to keep our roadways (and drivers of these vehicles) safe.

Additionally, since the driver above was likely employed at the time, he is may be entitled to workers compensation. This may be able to pay for his medical costs as well as weekly compensation for him to live on while he is recovering.
