An accident that occurred in Port Allen, Louisiana this week claimed the life of one young man, sources say. What time the accident occurred is currently unknown, but it happened on a local Louisiana highway between a sugarcane truck and a normal sized SUV. Responding emergency officials have stated that the use of alcohol or another illicit drug is not suspected in this accident, but routine toxicology reports are pending under Louisiana state law. This accident is still being investigated, and citations have not been made.
19 year-old Jonathon Austin of Port Allen, Louisiana was driving his 1998 Ford Explorer down local Louisiana highway 413 southbound when, for reasons that are currently unknown, his vehicle began to veer across the centerline of the highway into the northern bound lane. As he came over, his vehicle made a collision with a truck carrying sugarcane. The impact caused both of the cars to flip and go spinning off the highway. Austin's vehicle went to the right and flipped onto it's side in a nearby ditch.
Jonathon Austin of Port Allen, Louisiana was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the coroner's office. Austin, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The driver of the sugarcane truck, 49 year-old Ernest Birks of Maringouin, Louisiana was taken to Baton Rouge General Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. As of now, the investigations into this accident continue, and the State police investigating have not named any causes or citations from the wreck.
