Louisiana School Cross Guard Killed in Accident

Posted on Oct 14, 2010

This month in Moss Bluff, Louisiana an accident outside of a local school claimed the life of one pedestrian, and critically injured another. Responding State Police officers said that the accident happened in the early morning hours, and that they do not suspect impaired driving to be a factor in this accident. However, samples were pulled from the driver involved in this accident for analysis anyway.

The time was just before 7am when State Police were called to respond to an accident that happened just outside of Moss Bluff Elementary School. It began when 91 year old Wallace G. Berwick was driving down the local highway near the School called LA 378. The man was traveling and hit two deputies working as crossing guards for the elementary school, Roland E. Charles and Karl D. Edwards both of Lake Charles, Louisiana. According to the Deputies, it had been Charles' first day on the job of crossing duty.

Both of the crossing guards were taken to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital by responding emergency personnel. Roland E. Charles was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital, while Karl D. Edwards was reported to be in serious condition. Wallace G. Berwick was uninjured in the accident, and was charged with several citations that included careless operation of a motor vehicle. A report of driver condition and behavior has also been submitted to the Department of Motor Vehicles on Berwick's behalf.
