Lake Charles Louisiana car wreck kills one

Posted on Oct 14, 2010

This month in Lake Charles, Louisiana an accident involving an SUV and a pedestrian killed one person. Investigating police say that the incident happened at a local area of traffic concern on the school campus, and that impairment was not suspected in this accident. Routine toxicology tests are pending in accordance with Louisiana law for fatal car accidents despite the lack of suspicion for this wreck.

The accident began when an SUV of unknown make and model was driving on W. McNeese and one of the common streets around 7:30 AM, where student Ashlea Richard was trying to cross. For unknown reasons, the driver of the SUV did not spot Richard and continued driving forward. They made impact with one another, in the middle of the street, sources say. It is unknown how long it took for emergency personnel to arrive on the scene of the accident.

When help did arrive, Richards was rushed off to a local hospital in critical condition. From other sources about the accident, Richards later passed away from a result of the injuries she sustained in the car accident. It is unknown if the driver of the SUV was injured in this accident, or what damage their vehicle sustained. The accident is still under investigation from local police, and citations have yet to be made. The director of McNeese University offers great condolences to the student's family, and is working with city officials to create safe, visible crosswalks to avoid such a tragedy ever again.
