Swerving to avoid trash on the road, a driver crossed the median on I-10 and crashed into two vehicles and continued on into the woods.
The crash occurred about a mile from the Mississippi line in St. Tammany Parish. While two people who were in the westbound vehicles were taken to the hospital, their injuries were not deemed serious.
Traffic was backed up for more than 90 minutes as drivers had to weave their way around the scene. One car blocked the right lane of the roadway.
The driver of a Honda tried to avoid tire tread in the roadway about 5 PM. As he tried to avoid the hazard, he lost control of his car, as reported by state police.
As he crossed the median he hit two westbound vehicles, a sedan and a pickup truck. His momentum carried his car into the woods, and the other two cars stopped near the side of the highway.
Charges are pending. The resulting congestion backed up cars for more than mile as emergency workers tried to clear the scene.
