Four Siblings Killed at Train Crossing

Posted on Jun 24, 2010

Four siblings, all 18 years old or younger, were killed at a train crossing near Independence, LA. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the grieving family.

One 18-year-old female and her three younger brothers were killed as the car, driven by the 18-year-old, was struck by Amtrak's City of New Orleans passenger train. The female victim was also apparently seven months pregnant.

The train had just left New Orleans on its normal passenger run to Chicago, IL.

The accident took place on a Friday afternoon at a crossing near Highway 51 in Independence. The crossing is not gated but does have stop signs. Apparently, the car proceeded across the tracks without stopping and was struck by the oncoming train.

The location of the accident is one of six sites recommended for closure by the Louisiana Department of Transportation to Tangipahoa Parish after a double fatality accident occurred there in 2008. The agency vows to work with the parish to address the situation at that crossing.

Amtrak reported that no one on the train was injured.
