An 18-year-old woman was killed in an automobile accident in Baton Rouge. She and her mother had attended an orientation at LSU. Our condolences go out to her family and friends.
She was a member of the Fairhope High School International Baccalaureate program in Fairhope, Alabama.
The young lady was an accomplished student and well known in the Fairhope area for her gifts and achievements.
She received a full scholarship at LSU and was to study graphic design and architecture.
Police reported that she was driving a Nissan Versa and pulled out from a parking lot into the four-lane South Acadian Thruway. Her car was then struck on the driver's side by an F-150 Ford pickup truck driven by a 22-year-old.
The young victim was attempting to cross the northbound lanes to enter the southbound lanes. She probably did not see the truck coming.
Alcohol was not a factor. Both occupants of the car were wearing seat belts but the side impact was still deadly.
The victim's mother was a passenger in the car and received injuries. She was taken to a Baton Rouge hospital.
The driver of the truck received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
