A delivery truck crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 in Bossier City killing the driver of the delivery vehicle. Our condolences go out to the driver's friends and family.
The driver, a 24-year-old man, was dead at the scene. The accident happened on I-20 West near the Hamilton Road exit.
The young driver was pinned in the truck for an hour after the accident, as emergency crews had difficulty extricating him.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured. Apparently, alcohol was not a contributing factor in the incident.
No citations were issued in the accident.
Other drivers stated they were forced to stop immediately after the accident. That stretch of highway is usually blocked during rush hour traffic, and it took about an hour and half for crews to clear the scene of the accident.
Truck accidents are regularly studied by agencies charged with keeping our nation's highways safe. Fatality accidents involving large trucks are unusually represented in the total of fatal accidents on the highway.
In a study of up to 1000 factors that affect truck crashes involving over 1000 large trucks, over 950 non-truck vehicles, over 250 fatalities, and over 1400 injuries, the major factor found affecting the accident was action or inaction on the part of the driver of the truck or another vehicle. Among accidents caused by driver action or inaction, studies note that driver fatigue is a major contributing factor.
