Covington, Louisiana wreck kills one, injures four

Posted on Oct 16, 2010

An accident on the Tangipahoa and St.Tammany parish lines this week claimed the life of one person, and injured four others. Sources say the accident happened on a local highway when the group was returning home from a club meeting. It is unknown and has not been released if drug or alcohol use is a suspected factor in this wreck. The accident is still under investigation by State police, and no charges or citations have been made.

The wreck began when 21 year-old Benjamin J. Moreno was driving himself and four friends back from a club in Hammond,Louisiana in his Honda Civic. For unknown reasons, Moreno lost control of his vehicle on US 190 just inside the St.Tammany Parish line. As the car began to cross the centerline, it is said that Moreno tried correcting to the right. The car began to spin, sources say, and started traveling backwards. It then entered a ditch and was struck by a tree that caved in the driver's side of the roof before continuing to spin, then hitting an embankment before coming to rest.

Moreno, who was wearing a seatbelt, was killed instantly reporting State Police have said. The other passengers 18 year-old Amanda Breaux, 19 year-old Jessica Moreno, 20 year-old Brandon Scott, and 20 year-old Robert Trevino were moderately injured in the accident and taken to local hospitals. Their injuries were pronounced non-life threatening at the time of the accident. Investigations into this wreck continue as State Police work on obtaining toxicology reports for the driver, and no citations have been made for this accident.
