18 wheeler jackknifes on Louisiana interstate

An accident this month left the interstate closed on the eastbound side for an extended period of time. It happened when an 18 wheeler skidded to avoid an aggressively entering driver coming onto the interstate from a ramp. Eventually he skidded, turning over, and jackknifing his trailer. Reporting police say that traffic was backed up for an extended period of time as emergency response tried cleaning up the mess.

In particular, the car that was trying to merge in as she pulled from the right hand shoulder had a flat tire. Then, traffic surrounding the car began to slow down considerably to accommodate the driver. The driver of the 18 wheeler was trying to brake and keep up with traffic when for some reason he lost traction and began skidding. The truck went 289 skidding before he hit the side of the interstate, causing him to flip and his trailer to jackknife.

Luckily, no hazardous materials were involved in the accident and traffic had to be diverted for several hours as people worked to clean up the mess. The investigation is closed and those involved have been cited for the accident. The following traffic back up lasted several hours into the evening, and police officers eventually guided cars off the interstate and through city traffic before merging them back onto the interstate.
