Where to file suit after your car or truck accident

One of the first issues that we discuss with our clients is the location where they can file suit. Now in Louisiana, if you're involved in an accident involving a private vehicle, generally you'll file suit where the accident occurred or where the owner of the vehicle or driver of the vehicle resides in Louisiana. If the owner and driver and/or driver was an out-of-state resident, a lot of times your suit will have to be filed in federal court. Now if you're involved in an accident involving a company, such as a commercial vehicle or an 18-wheeler, usually that suit will be filed where the accident occurred or in the location known as the principal place of business of the company within Louisiana.
