Working at Night in a Daytime World

Diurnal is a word that means functioning during the day. It refers to daytime. The world for humans is diurnal. Nocturnal means functioning at night. There are a number of nighttime animals in the world. They come out at night to feed and live. Bats may be the animals that come first to mind.

Humans are not nocturnal. They live and work during the day.

However, that does not mean that things don't need to be done at night and that human workers don't need to be working at night. Things do need to get done, and workers are assigned to do them.
That naturally leads to drawbacks when essentially diurnal humans must function at high levels in a nocturnal world.

Our Natural Rhythm

People who work various shifts soon learn what it means to be nocturnal as a diurnal being. It is difficult to maintain normal sleep habits or eating when you are used to doing so. It is not just sleep and eating that are considered when truck drivers become shift workers.

We all have a natural biological rhythm. We instinctively know when we are supposed to be active and when we are supposed to sleep. Our bodies tell us so. Unfortunately, sometimes our jobs dictate that we break that normal rhythm. We can't all work on the same schedule as each other.

Truck drivers are shift workers. Many must work at night and they must do so on the nation's highways in charge of getting an 80,000-pound vehicle from here to there. This change in natural rhythms affects everyone who is on the highways with those trucks.

For the most part, truck drivers also work alone. The can confer with no one when they are traveling down those highways late at night. Their judgment must be as good as it can be. If not, the result can be calamitous.

Frankly, fatigue can play a significant role in truck crashes on the highways. That is the major reason why the government, both national and state, regulates working hours for truck drivers. It is easy to regulate the amount of time worked. It is much more difficult to regulate when worked.

If you are involved in a truck accident, it could be because rules were broken. Protect your rights by calling an attorney for advice.
