How do you tell a good motor carrier from a bad one in Louisiana?

Not all Louisiana motor carriers are bad or irresponsible or mean, or whatever you might think they are when you hear and read about the causes of devastating truck accidents.

Companies operating an 18-wheeler fleet are driven by the economics of their business, and those who are well managed will see that a good reputation in the eyes of the public, truck drivers and the authorities is a valuable asset.

The authorities won't take any chances and have implemented a Safety Measurement System (SMS) to monitor motor carriers and develop an objective way to rate them.

SMS is organized into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICS) defined as follows:
  • Unsafe Driving - Examples include speeding, reckless driving, improper lane change, and inattention.
  • Fatigued Driving - Includes exceeding hours-of-service, incomplete or inaccurate logbook, and driving while drowsy.
  • Driver Fitness - Violations include failing to have a valid driver's license and being medically unqualified to operate a commercial vehicle.
  • Controlled Substances and Alcohol - use or possession of controlled substances or alcohol.
  • Vehicle Maintenance - Includes brakes, lights and other defects.
  • Cargo-Related - Examples include improper load securement, cargo retention, overweight, and hazardous material handling.
  • Crash Indicator - Information on crash reports and identification of histories or patterns of high crash involvement, including frequency and severity.

In Louisiana, accidents with heavy trucks can be devastating, ending with people being killed or suffering very serious injuries. Even if the crash was clearly caused by the truck, getting adequate compensation is often a long, arduous battle against large insurance and trucking corporations that fight to protect their finances.

If you have been involved in a serious semi-truck crash, contact the truck accident attorneys of the Young Firm in New Orleans immediately for a free, no obligation evaluation of your case.
