The results of a study done by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway are worth noting. The study was done over several years and within several states. The study sampled large truck fatality and injury crashes. Data were assembled on up to 1,000 factors in each crash. The sample was 967 crashes involving 1,127 large trucks, 959 non-truck vehicles, 251 fatalities, and 1,408 injuries.
The majority factor affecting the accident in most of these cases was action or inaction on the part of the truck driver or the driver of another vehicle. Driver recognition and decisions were the most common factors for trucks and passenger vehicles.
Truck drivers were noted less often than passenger vehicles in driver performance areas. In driving too fast and fatigue both sets of drivers were found lacking. Fatigue was noted more often for passenger vehicles and driving too fast for truck drivers.
Brake problems were more common for trucks than passenger cars. Roadway problems and weather were significant causes of accidents. Traffic flow problems were also significant.
For more detailed information on the causes of truck accidents, see this report here and review page 15.
