What Do On Board Brake Monitoring Systems Do?

What do on board stroke monitoring systems do? Onboard systems enhance truck safety by relaying brake adjustment information and status to drivers and others.

Major Brake Problems

In an air-braked vehicle, when a driver puts on the brakes, air flows into the brake air chamber. That forces the chamber (air actuator) pushrod out against the slack adjuster, a lever that adjusts internally. The slack adjuster connects with an S-shaped cam on the opposite end. This is the most common type of air brake.

When the slack adjuster is pushed, the shaft and the S-cam turn. This forces the brake shoes and linings against the brake drum. This creates friction and brakes the vehicle. When brake linings wear, the gap between the ling and drum increases and the push rod, slack adjuster and camshaft must all move more.

The slack adjuster works here. The mechanism can be manual or self-adjusting. It rotates the camshaft inside the slack adjuster housing and moves the S-cam to decrease the clearance between the brake lining and drum.

When the gap increases between the brake drum and lining, which can be due to the failure to adjust manually or the self-adjuster mechanism not making the proper adjustment, the actuator push rod pushes out to the point where the actuator force is reduced.

Sometimes the pushrod will even bottom out inside the actuator housing. If it does not develop force on the slack adjuster, brake force is zero.

On board brake monitoring systems can monitor this problem and decrease the possibility of failure. This provides important safety benefits.
