The scare of a New Orleans taxicab ride

We have all been through some hair-raising moments when, sitting in the back of a worn-out cab, we scramble to extract a safety belt piece from between the seats, not daring to look at all the near misses flashing past.

Granted, not all taxi drivers are irresponsible and reckless; most of them are experienced and professional. The memory of a scary ride sticks, however, because we don't like to entrust our lives to unknown or unqualified people.

Statistics about taxicab accidents are hard to come by, but one thing stands out: New Orleans, with at least 2.4 cabs per 1,000 inhabitants, is in the same league as D.C., Manhattan and the downtown parts of Chicago and Boston in taxicab density and use.

If you are injured in an accident while on a taxi ride, several questions may arise:
  • Is your cab licensed, or is it a so-called gypsy cab (illegally operating without a medallion)?
  • Was your cab driver at fault?
  • Who is the taxi owner or licensed operator?
  • Was the cab driver operating for a company as an independent contractor?

The nature of the relationship between the driver and the taxi company is important and at times difficult to untangle. So are the various insurance policies that might or might not be relevant to the case.

Many taxicab accidents happen because the driver is overconfident in his "expertise," knowing the streets and the traffic flow by heart, or he is constantly changing lanes and routes when there is a jam, talking on the radio or simply exhausted after 12 hours of driving and little sleep. Some drivers are ill and take medications because they can't afford not to work.

One thing is sure: whether you are sitting in the front or in the back, buckle up and do not consent to be driven in a cab that is not fitted with seatbelts for all passengers.

If you have been involved in a taxicab crash, contact immediately the taxicab accident attorneys of the Young Firm in New Orleans for a free, no commitment evaluation of your case.
