Safe Trucks in Louisiana Depend on the Motor Carrier’s Safety Rating

Accidents with large trucks are different. Not only do 18-wheelers cause considerable damage, but also in most cases, the ultimate responsibility for the accident does not lie with the truck driver, but with the motor carrier. Trucking companies are indeed responsible for the way the trucks, the ones they own and the ones they lease, are operated.
The motor carrier’s responsibility
Interstate motor carriers are required to abide by the wide scope of regulations enacted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regarding drivers’ hours-of-service, driver qualification, driver license requirements and traffic violations record, truck maintenance program and controls, financial responsibility and insurance, operational and safety records, etc. In order to make it easy for authorities and the public to evaluate a motor carrier’s score with respect to these complex and numerous rules, the FMCSA has developed a rating system similar to car safety ratings.
Motor carrier safety rating
Each interstate trucking company is given a rating based on a compliance review. This on-site examination is initiated by the FMCSA or may be requested by the motor carrier if it believes that the rating should be changed. Reviews are also conducted following complaints, or to investigate potential violations, and may lead to penalties and fines. There are three rating levels:
Satisfactory: Safety management controls are deemed adequate.
Conditional: The motor carrier does not have adequate safety management controls in place, and this could result in violations.
Unsatisfactory: Same as above, but the lack of adequate safety management controls has already caused violations.
A trucking firm with an “unsatisfactory” rating is not allowed to operate and may find itself put out of business by the Administration. The public has access to the ratings on the FMCSA website, and can download a free general review of any particular motor carrier.
