Truck Owner-Operator Lease Purchase Survey

A July 14th, 2011 update of a large-scale private study on company truck lease options shows how most independent owner-operator truck leasing agreements with motor carriers in Louisiana and elsewhere in the country end up in failure, and are rated by the surveyed truckers as "scams."

This study is important, because truck owner-operators are the backbone of the trucking industry, and how much money they make is directly relevant to your safety on the road.

Why is a truck owner-operator's financial situation important for Louisiana motorists?

The harder it is for a truck owner to earn a living, the more hours he or she will work to make ends meet. The truck driver will be tempted to accept any new haulage job coming his or her way, irrespective of fatigue or health condition. Logbook cheating becomes commonplace and truck driver turnover brings inexperienced and unqualified truckers behind the wheel.

What does the survey say about company lease truck drivers?

The survey pulled in 3,611 responses from professional truckers across the country, and was brought to a close early February 2011. The results:

What describes best the amount of yearly gross income the motor carrier said you would be able to make?
  • $35,000 to $45,000: 9.3%
  • $46,000 to $65,000: 13.4%
  • $66,000 to $100,000: 38.1%
  • Over $100,000: 39.2%

What was your actual gross income?
  • $35,000 to $45,000: 73%
  • $46,000 to $65,000: 6%
  • $66,000 to $100,000: 3%
  • Over $100,000: 18%

How many miles did the company say you would average per week?
  • 2,500 to 3,000: 63%
  • 3,001 to 3,500: 17%
  • 3,501 to 4,000: 14%
  • Over 4,000: 6%

What were your actual miles per week average?
  • 1,000 to 2,000: 46%
  • 2,001 to 2,500: 32%
  • 2,500 to 3,000: 15%
  • 3,001 to 3,500: 4%
  • 3,501 to 4,000: 2%
  • Over 4,000: 1%

How soon after starting work did you experience your first serious mechanical / safety issue?
  • Within 0 - 3 months: 76%
  • Within 3 - 6 months: 16%
  • Within 6 - 12 months: 8%

Truck drivers have a right to work under safe and fair conditions. Even if some owner-operators are doing well under leasing agreements with motor carriers, and even if some reputable motor carriers are well managed companies treating their workers fairly, the results of this survey show that a sizeable part of the motor carrier business is based on a weak foundation.
