Louisiana Teens Should Know More About Car Accidents

In 2010, some 5,000 people aged 15 to 20 were killed in car accidents. Teenage car crashes in Louisiana are the leading cause of teen deaths. This is likely to make parents uneasy when their teenage son or daughter has reached the driving age, and is about to stand behind the wheel with a proud feeling of, "I have made it, I am an adult!"

Parents staying awake at night knowing their kids are out there, having fun but lacking the hard won driving experience they have accumulated over the years, can do more to reduce their own stress and protect young drivers and their friends.

What can or should parents do to protect their teenage drivers?

The answer is: Tell them the truth! Teenagers need to know and understand the dark side of driving. This is not meant to spoil their fun, but to make them realize that everything has a price, and in the case of driving it is a steep one.

Show them the statistics: Open their eyes on young driver car crash statistics, compared to other age groups. Immaturity, distraction, failure to wear a seatbelt or driving over the speed limit are all contributing factors to a higher accident rate, and each of these causes should be discussed separately.

Talk about car insurance and driver's licenses: Give a detailed account of what insurance costs, covers and fails to cover. Talk about the cost of material damage, medical expenses, loss of income, and points added to their driver's license. Let them imagine what life will be with a suspended license or a criminal record.

Make them share the burden: What is free is not valued. Teenagers are used to being offered everything for free. Becoming adults, they need to change their habits, and you can help with this process. Paying a share of the insurance, gasoline, maintenance and repairs of the car gives them an increased sense of ownership that is likely to induce a greater care for the car and the way it is driven.

Involve their friends: Lecturing a teenager is counter-productive. They listen and relate mostly to their friends. This why their best buddies should be involved in your efforts. Together, they will resist peer pressure to do stupid things.

Be practical: Examples of accidents that happened to you or people you know, pictures of car wrecks, visits to a car crash victim in hospital, rules and regulations, and your own involvement in their training and practical exercises will create a bond with you that is stronger than the influence other groups might have.
