The Car Louisiana Drivers Can’t Afford Not To Buy

Even with a restricted budget, buying a car is exciting. There is so much choice that you will probably find the car that fits perfectly.

Most people in Louisiana keep the same car at least 4 years and travel 100,000 miles or more, which means you should make your pick based on slightly more severe criteria than color, engine power, and good looks. After all, driving the equivalent of four times the distance around the globe, there is a fair chance that your car will be involved in some sort of accident, which could be a fender bender or a serious crash resulting in injuries.

Have a look at the NHTSA Safety Ratings before you buy your car.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed their 5-Star Safety Rating System to provide consumers an easy way to compare the crash protection and rollover safety offered by any car on the market.

Initiated in 1978, the program first measured the level of safety in frontal crashes. Side-impact tests were added in 1997, and since 2001, the NHTSA has provided unique rollover assessments.

The 5-Star program has provided a huge incentive to the car manufacturing industry to design safer vehicles. More and more consumers are using the rating system as a major choice criterion, and manufacturers of safer cars are eager to advertise their high rating.

What does the NHTSA do differently?

While other organizations test vehicle safety, the NHTSA is the only one to test rollover resistance, in addition to frontal and side impact tests. The NHTSA not only tests the “passive protection” of occupants in a crash, but will also note the presence of crash avoidance technologies for each vehicle model.

Crash avoidance technologies allow the driver to keep or regain control of a vehicle before an accident occurs. The main systems presently on the market are:

  • Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

Look at the NHTSA website for more information about the protection offered by cars with a higher safety rating, and make the right decision.
