Avoid Late Night Driving in Louisiana, Even if You Don’t Drink.
Many people in Louisiana, returning home in the wee hours of the morning, are concerned about driving drunk and find ways around it; they avoid strong liquors, eat well and drink lots of water at least 1 ½ hours before leaving, or arrange to have a sober person to drive in their place.
All very sensible, and certainly much better than what so many irresponsible drivers do. Recently released nationwide 2009 fatal accident statistics for passenger vehicles show how the alcohol-related accident rate increases at night. The number of drivers killed with a blood alcohol content (BAC) equal or higher than 0.08 jumps from 20 percent of the total during the day to 62 percent of the total at night (from 9 pm to 6 am).
The most dangerous time to drive around at night is between midnight and 3 am, when 72 percent of all fatally injured drivers are intoxicated. In the early morning hours, statistics show a sharp decline, from 57 percent between 3 am and 6 am, to 16 percent between 6 am and 9 am, and finally 9 percent between 9 am and noon.
The same trend is valid for different days of the week, the drunken driving fatal crash rate increasing sharply during the weekend, from 26 percent to 48 percent.
How do fatal DUI crashes happen? The majority of fatal accidents due to alcohol consumption are single-vehicle crashes, but the multiple-vehicle fatal crash rate increases from day to night just the same.

Whether you drive in the middle of the night after a party or coming back from work, the message is the same: beware of other vehicles and keep a safe distance from vehicles behaving erratically.
