Road Accident Fatalities Are Down in Louisiana. Are Injuries Down As Well?

The latest countrywide statistics published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) pointed to an impressive 10 percent decrease in motor vehicle crash fatalities from 2008 to 2009, confirming the trend of the last four years.

The decline is significant for passenger car occupants (minus 11 percent), large truck occupants (minus 26 percent) and, for the first time, even for motorcycle riders (minus 16 percent).

As one of New Orleans' and Louisiana's top motor vehicle accident attorneys, the Young Firm has long known that crash fatalities only tell part of the story, and that the proportion of people injured in motor vehicle collisions is considerable.

What is the real picture like?

In 2009, 33,808 people died in motor vehicle accidents. Over the same period, the number of injured victims amounted to 2,217,000, a 5.5 percent decline over 2008.

For every person killed, there are 65.6 people injured in traffic accidents. Furthermore, the decline in crash injuries is not as spectacular as the decrease in fatalities. There is a reason for that. Motor vehicle accident fatalities have declined over the years for several reasons:
  • Targeted road safety campaigns;
  • Strict law enforcement and stiff penalties;
  • Much better car safety devices.

We would like to add "better driver behavior" to the list, but the sad truth is that motorists do not seem to get the message. If some driver groups probably behave better, some habits remain the same or get worse. Statistics show that the proportion of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities over total fatalities is 32 percent in the United States, the same percentage as ten years ago. In Louisiana, the proportion is 36 percent, among the highest in the country. Distracted driving has also been a growing concern as a major cause of crashes and is not currently under control.

Saving lives doesn't mean avoiding injuries.

The single most important factor in the sharp decline of road accident fatalities is the far better safety of newer vehicles. From airbags and anti-lock brake systems to electronic stability control, an increasing proportion of vehicles on our roads are much safer and prevent people from being killed in serious crashes. Even so, serious crashes remain violent, and the best safety devices won't protect occupants from the impact and all the injuries associated with it.

The way forward to further reduce the number of road accidents and their terrible consequences is to increase the awareness that driving is a serious matter, requiring focus and carrying responsibilities.
