Federal Truck Length Regulations

In the area of truck length regulation, the Federal government regulates minimum lengths on national highways. The regulations largely control what the states cannot do rather than determine length limits.

Federal regulations control tractor-semitrailer combinations. The regulations only apply when these combinations are in use on the National Network or in transit between highways and terminals or service locations.

Tractor-Semitrailer Combinations
Tractor-semitrailer combinations allow a minimum length of 48 feet with exceptions for grandfathered limits in particular states. States cannot impose limits on the National Highway system even if the trailer is longer than minimums. States may also not impose an overall limit on a truck pulling a semitrailer or limit the distance between axles of such combinations.

Trucks that carry cargoes in the same chassis as the power unit, known as straight trucks, are not regulated by the Federal government but subject to state regulations. Straight trucks towing a trailer are also subject to state regulations with the total combination not exceeding the Federal limit of 65 feet. There are exceptions for dromedaries, maxi-cube vehicles, and automobile and boat transporters.

Truck Tractor-Semitrailer-Trailer Combinations
For trailers and semitrailers in combination, states must allow minimum lengths of 28 feet. Semitrailers of 28.6 inches in use on December 1, 1982 are also grandfathered in as long as the overall length is not more than 65 feet.
