Truck and Bus Drivers Prohibited from Texting

Everybody wants big rig and big bus drivers to be safe, safe for themselves and safe for others on the road.

Thus, the Department of Transportation instituted new rules to prevent distracted driving on the country's roads.

Commercial truck and bus drivers will be prohibited from texting from any handheld device. Drivers must keep their attention on the road.

Ann Ferro, Administrator of the Federal Motor Safety Administration stated, "Our regulations will help prevent unsafe activity within the cab, and we want to make it crystal clear that texting is one of those unsafe activities these regulations prohibit."

The administration believes that this policy seriously affects inter-state drivers who carry cargo or passengers, but here is no intent to deny these drivers a chance to make a living.

The message is simply driver responsibly. The belief is that commercial driving while texting is very dangerous. Unfortunately, not enough drivers seem willing to self-discipline and avoid the problem.

The government sponsored the first summit on distracted driving last fall and promised to send a clear message that texting while driving must stop.

This latest step applies to inter-state truck drivers and commercial bus or van drivers who carry more than eight passengers.

Researchers at Virginia Tech believe that drivers who text while driving are 23 times more likely to get into some type of accident. Adding bus drivers to the restrictions is seen as protecting ordinary citizens who have an expectation of safety.

A driver who violates the regulations is subject to a $2,750 fine.

On average, drivers take their eyes off the road for five seconds when they text and they can move the length of a football field in that time.
