Aggressive Truck Driving Causes Concern

In the news, it seems we too often hear stories today about “road rage,” a dangerous and extreme form of aggressive driving. What we don't seem to hear much about are the every day occurrences of bad driving and common aggressive driving that can strike anyone of us at any time on the road. Aggressive driving is especially a problem for all of us when the other driver is in a large truck.

While most truck drivers take time and effort to be good citizens on the road and to drive carefully, even the safest driver can sometimes go astray, and the worst drivers can be repeat offenders. Perhaps a driver is late for delivering a load and they are trying to make up for lost time or perhaps the driver is just tired and irritable.

Aggressive driving is commonly made up of three dangerous road actions:
  • tailgating
  • weaving
  • careless lane changes

In the worst cases of aggressive driving that result in an accident, the offending driver is often charged with reckless driving but in some cases can also be charged criminally. This should not surprise anyone when you consider an 80,000-pound truck moving erratically and slamming into a 4,000-pound car. The consequences can be deadly.

There are probably a number of driving behaviors that you don't want to see on the road, especially from a large truck. Tailgating is certainly one of them. Sometimes, speeding up is way to avoid a vehicle behind you tailgating. If that does not work, try to get that truck to pass you or pull over when it is safe to do so or to stop.

If you look in the rear view mirror, and you see a truck weaving in an out of traffic just to get a few places ahead in the line, be aware of the potential danger. Get in the far right hand lane; let the offender pass you. Stop if you must to put distance between yourself and the other driver.

Most truck drivers understand the nature of the blind spots that go together with driving a big truck. Some drivers do seem oblivious and they embrace unfortunate dangerous lane changes. This is another time when you must drive not only for yourself but for the other driver too. Don't let their actions cause you or your car harm and damage.

You can manage getting through each driving day with aggressive drivers all around you, but caution and care is an absolute necessity.
