When distraction loses its funny side in Louisiana.

Distracted people often find themselves in unexpected or annoying situations and are the source of amusing anecdotes. But, as any airline pilot or ship captain will tell you, when you are in charge and the stakes are high, distraction is out of the question, and only a laser sharp focus will prevent a catastrophe.
To what extent can drivers in Louisiana afford to be distracted?

There is no room for compromise. Distracted driving in Louisiana is lethal and puts not just the driver in harm’s way, but can kill or inflict terrible injuries on pedestrians, cyclists, bikers and other drivers.

According to a recent study, 80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of all near-crashes involved driver inattention within three seconds of the collision. The researchers measured the increase of a crash risk in various driver distraction situations, and the results are frightening:
Behavior                           Crash risk increased
Texting on cell phone               23 times
Reaching for a moving object    9 times
Drowsiness                                4 times
Using cell phone                        4 times
Looking at an external object    3.7 times
Reading                                    3.4 times
Applying makeup                      3 times

Because cell phones are so widespread and are often used during a long drive, they have become the number one source of driver inattention behind the wheel.

Distracted driving has also increased as a result of more comfort and technology in the car, with navigation systems and video screens competing with lunchboxes and coffee for the driver’s attention.
