Truck Blind Spots

You should always be aware and extra cautious when driving in another vehicle's blind spot. All vehicles, including motorcycles, have them. Some motorists, even experienced truckers, will change lanes without checking carefully their blind spot. You should always try to adjust your driving position to stay out of other vehicles' blind spots.

Your blind spot depends on the vehicle you are driving. Cars usually have blind spots on the sides and at the rear of the car. You can't see anything in those areas by looking in the rear view mirrors. Some drivers in some vehicles can't see anything behind them or even sometimes in the front quarter. Some drivers can't see anything low to the ground.

Tractor-trailer rigs have very particular blind spots. These rigs bend in the middle; they are articulated. Picture in your mind a semi-trailer turning. As it turns around a corner, the side mirrors are the only rear vision that the driver has.

When the tractor heads into the turn, the turning side mirror only views the side of the truck's trailer. The other side mirror points off into space. The driver literally cannot see anything behind him. He actually must stick his head out and look. You can also hide completely behind the trailer of a large truck. It is not a good idea at all to drive close to the rear of a truck that you cannot see around or over. The driver might not even know you are there.

Always try to make sure you are visible to the driver when driving near large trucks.
