The main problem with truck accidents may not be the total number of accidents each year but how dangerous and deadly any truck accident can be.
That notwithstanding, there are a significant number of truck accidents throughout America each year. Each year there are often more than 50,000 truck accidents and in some years, the number approaches 60,000.
There are over 4,500 fatal accidents each year involving large trucks. Most fatal accidents occur in rural areas and during the day. Few are DWI related on the part of the truck driver. These statistics are much lower than for light trucks and motorcycles, with 22% and 29% of fatal accidents involving DWI, respectively.
Large truck drivers involved in fatal accidents do have a greater history of speeding violations compared to passenger vehicle divers – 27% versus 22%.
California had the most fatal vehicle accidents in 2003 but Texas had the most fatal truck accidents.
Large trucks are 9% of all vehicles involved in fatal accidents but only 4% of injury and property damage only accidents. In one year, of 4,898 large trucks involved in a fatal accident, 76% were combination trucks.
Front accident collisions occur most of the time, 2,354, or 50%, in one year versus 382 left side, 188 right side, and 720 rear collisions. In 2003, 608 large trucks were involved in fatal accidents caused by a rollover.
