According to a
KSLA News report, a major accident involving 3 passenger vehicles and 2 tractor-trailers occurred last Friday, closing down I-20 at Bert Kouns Industrial Loop (Exit 8) in both directions for several hours. One elderly woman was killed in the crash.
A GMC pick-up truck, a Saturn Vue, a Peterbuilt and a Kenworth tractor-trailer and a Ford Bronco II were all traveling westbound on the interstate when the crash occurred.
Shreveport Fire Department Assistant Chief Lewis Johnson declared that three persons sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries and were transported to LSU.
The name of the deceased person had not been released at the time of the report.
The Caddo Parish Coroner's Office has sent a coroner to the scene to investigate the cause and circumstances of the crash.
Pileups are particularly dangerous because of repeated impacts crushing vehicles from all sides. Escaping survivors are often hit when they try to reach safer ground. A fire in one vehicle can quickly spread to other vehicles through spilled gasoline. Finally, a multiple-vehicle crash can overrun local emergency services and make it difficult for them to reach the victims.
Pileups often develop on high-speed traffic freeways when one vehicle abruptly stops, creating a deadly chain reaction of rear-ending crashes.
