While all automobile crashes can be serious, especially those involving an injury, an accident between a car and a truck can be deadly. An accident between a car and a large truck is usually a major event for those involved.
That's one reason why the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Safety Administration completed a major study of the causes of truck accidents. Taking several years to complete and sampling several states, the study looked at about 1,000 factors in each crash. The sample involved 1,127 large trucks, 959 non-trucks, 251 fatalities, and 1,408 injuries.
Driver actionsThe results were illuminating. Not surprisingly, the main cause was driver action or non-action, basically driver error. Driver decisions and recognition were the most common factors for cars and trucks.
Truck drivers came off better than passenger car drivers in this area, which should be expected since they drive for a living. However, driving too fast and driver fatigue affected both groups to differing degrees, with fatigue being more common among car drivers and speeding more common among truck drivers.
Other factorsBrake problems, roadway problems, and weather were all significant factors. Traffic flow was also important. You can find details about the factors that caused these accidents in this report with
details on page 15.
