You would not go hiking in the mountains without the right shoes. You know these shoes are essential because they provide the grip, sturdiness and cushioning to protect your feet, support your ankles and keep you from sliding down steep slopes.
Your car’s tires are not much different. They keep you on the road and on the right track. Like your shoes, they are submitted to daily mistreatment and abuse. They need your attention if you don’t want them to fail you at the worse possible moment. What should you do to prevent breakdowns and
serious Louisiana accidents?
- Inspect your tires every month and before any long trip, checking for proper air pressure, uneven wear, cracks and cuts, and foreign objects like glass or nails;
- Check the tire information placard or your vehicle manual to find the maximum recommended pressure for the front and rear tires;
- Go to a gas or service station to inflate or deflate your tires and bring them to the appropriate pressure. Make sure all valves have caps;
- Verify the tire tread on all your tires at various places. If the tread is less than 1/16th inch, your tires must be replaced. Front tires usually wear out faster than rear tires.
Tires lose air over time, and the pressure of your tires will vary if they are cold or warm. You should always have a tire pressure gauge in your car and check the pressure when tires are cold, i.e. before you start driving your car.
