The reality of driving today on America's roadways is that hidden hazards exist. A well known movie director, Alan Pakula, was driving his car from Manhattan to his Long Island home a hundred miles away. It was a drive he knew well and did often.
As Pakula got to exit 49 on the Long Island Expressway, a car ahead of him ran over a seven-foot steel rod. The rod was kicked up into the air, whereupon it smashed into Pakula's windshield. It struck his head and killed him instantly. The rod was the type used to secure a tractor-trailer load. It could not be determined where the rod came from.
All too often such a strange
accident occurs from road hazards that some would call freak, but they can still be deadly. A 22-year-old may suffer severe bodily damage from an accident after avoiding a deer on the road. A piece of cargo may fall off a truck and strike a following vehicle causing major injuries to the driver, or a falling tree may kill occupants after it falls onto a car traveling on a highway.
What all of these incidents have in common is that they were caused by hidden and unique hazards, but they can and do take lives.
Believe it or not, there are over 1.6 million accidents each year caused by animals, debris, trees, etc. Such accidents result in over 600 deaths each year. These types of accidents resulting in death increased significantly over the last few years.
With so many more highway deaths each year, totaling over 42,000, these strange and unique highway deaths don't draw much attention but they happen even if the root causes go somewhat ignored.
No matter how conscientious you are as a driver, you can become the victim of such a freak accident, and someone else may have started the chain of events that resulted in your accident or injury. A car or truck may have left debris in the road that eventually led to your crash.
