Commercial Truck License Scam and Homeland Security

Believe it or not, there have been cases of foreign nationals gaining commercial truck licenses even when they do not meet minimum standards. Considering our ongoing threats to national security and the facet that large trucks often carry dangerous materials, this is a serious matter.

Just a couple of years ago, eight people pleaded guilty to helping foreign nationals in just that way. Citizens of Bosnia and Somalia were given passing grades without completing their driving exams.

The U.S. Attorney for the area where this happened was quoted at the time as saying the defendants shirked their responsibility to safeguard the public and even protect national security.

What can be of major concern is that the fraud was committed at the level of superintendent of a Career Center driving school, which was part of a local school district. They had a contract to be a third party tester of persons taking the driving portion of the commercial drivers test.

This individual made an agreement with a truck company training school to give preferential treatment to the company's trainees, all of whom were foreign nationals. The superintendent violated several rules and state regulations to ensure the students obtained their licenses.

This was done for an under-the-table payment of just $20 for each student receiving special treatment, though the total number of students so treated approached 300, netting the guilty parties up to $6,000.
Even when national security is not an issue, fraudulently obtained commercial truck driving licenses put unqualified drivers on America's roads every day.
